Genoan receives fellowship

Jonathon Riggs of Genoa, has been accepted as a 2007-08 Undergraduate Fellow with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies in Washington, D.C.

Johnathon is a 2004 graduate of Douglas High, and is completing his junior year at Santa Clara University.

As a Fellow, he will be provided with a unique educational experience that focuses on the threat of terrorism to democracy to enable him to stimulate informed debate about the subject.

"FDD is an excellent opportunity to learn about Israeli efforts to combat terrorism. I feel I can bring back some unique insights as to how we, as Americans, can stay informed about the realities of the war on terror," Riggs said.

Del Giudice receives Air Force commission

Juliette Grace Del Giudice was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force upon graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., on May 30.

Del Giudice, the granddaughter of Gardnerville residents Jim and Jackie Norris, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in business management.

She was a distinguished graduate in her major - being in the top 10 percent of 978 students in her class and recognized athletically for the past four years.

While at the Academy, Del Giudice held many leadership roles such as being one of three flight commanders for the fall semester and was the athletic officer during the previous semester.

She was flight commander during summer 2006 working basic training and was also co-captain of the women's JV basketball team.

After graduation, Del Giudice will be an officer in the Medical Services Corps and will be working in hospital administration at Luke Air Force Base on Aug. 4.

During her leave she plans to spend much of her time at home in Sparks with her parents, Jeff and Sherri Del Giudice, and visiting her grandparents in Gardnerville.
