June is just about here, and the 114th annual Carson Valley Days festivities are right around the corner. Hosted by the Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club No. 85, the fun takes place June 6-9. This year’s theme is “Music in the Carson Valley.”

Prior to the parade down Highway 395 on June 8, Main Street Gardnerville (mainstreetgardnerville.org/) invites everyone to participate in the Carson Valley Days Classic 5K Fun Run/Walk.

The 8 a.m. event starts and finishes at Heritage Park, 1447 Courthouse Alley, and goes along the parade route. Participants are encouraged to dress to reflect the musical theme of this year’s parade.

This event is open to all; runners age 11 and older are $25 through June 5 and $35 on the day of the event. Runners younger than 11 can participate for free but still need to register. Visit runsignup.com/Race/NV/Gardnerville/CVDaysClassic for more information and to sign up.

This year, MSG has launched a “We Run This Town” fun run/walk series, starting with the CV Days event. Next up is the July 4 Freedom 5K Run for the Wreath/Wreaths Across America fundraiser, and a Paint it Pink 5K for breast cancer awareness on October 19. Those who register for and complete all three runs will receive a commemorative “I Run This Town” T-shirt.

Library offers seed packets to patrons

Starting June 1, the Douglas County Public Library offers a Seed Library to patrons. Each person can check out up to ten packets of various seeds for personal use at no charge. Seed varieties currently include flowers and select fruits and vegetables.

To help support and maintain the program, patrons are encouraged to save their own seeds at the end of the growing season and donate some back to the library. Seeds will be accepted at the front desk and should be labeled as flowers, fruits, herbs, greens, or vegetables. Seeds from trees, shrubs, and grasses will not be collected.

The Minden Library is located at 1625 Library Lane. Connect with DCPL on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, library.douglascountynv.gov, or call 775-782-9841.

Flag Day event at the Elks Lodge

The Tahoe-Douglas Elks adhere to the pledge, “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them” (tahoedouglaselks.org). Over Memorial Day weekend, members from the Elks Lodge #2670 placed flags on the gravesites of military service members at Eastside Memorial Park. Volunteers participate in the annual remembrance by placing flags in the days leading up to Memorial Day and returning to remove them the week afterward.

On June 14, the Elks welcome the community to their annual Flag Day ceremony, which features a presentation and description of historical flags starting at 4 p.m. After the ceremony at the lodge, attendees can opt to stay for a fish and shrimp dinner from 5-6:30 p.m.

Dinner is $15 and includes fries and coleslaw. Meal reservations are required by June 12; visit tahoedouglaselks.org/coming-events to RSVP for the ceremony and the dinner.

The Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge is located at 1227 Kimmerling Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos. Proceeds from local Elks events benefit programs for seniors, veterans, and youth in the Carson Valley.
