Meyer-Kassel exhibition, fundraiser Wednesday at Genoa Courthouse Museum

The Douglas County Historical Society is conducting a fundraising reception 6-8 p.m. Wednesday featuring well-known European, national and local artist Hans-Meyer Kassel. 

Meyer-Kassel, born in Kassel, Germany, and spent his senior years living in Genoa, dedicating his talent on canvas with oils, pastels and pencil, subjects being statewide dignitaries, local people, scenes and events of his adopted country, preserving much of Carson Valley’s beauty and history.

Meyer-Kassel was a famous painter before he came to the United States, and was dubbed professor by Kaiser Wilhelm after painting a portrait of the ruler’s niece, according to his obituary published in The Record-Courier.

Meyer-Kassel’s nephew, Bill Brooks, was only 6 years old when Meyer-Kassell died Aug. 29, 1952, in Nevada’s oldest town after moving there in 1945.

The Douglas County Historical Society will be showcasing its entire collection at a fundraising reception at the Courthouse Museum, 2304 Main St., Genoa.

“Hans Meyer-Kassel Artist of Nevada” author Jack Bacon, Brooks and other members of the Meyer-Kassel family will be guests at the event. The reception includes a hosted wine bar and charcuterie.
