If you can't make it to the rodeo in Reno this weekend, there's always the carnival in Carson City.
Mills Park will be the place where the Carson City Youth Flag Football and Cheerleading Program will host a fund-raising event on Saturday.
Besides ice cream, hot dogs and nachos, entertainment includes a dunk tank, a dino bouncer, and a super slide -- not to mention a 40-yard dash to work off those calories afterwards.
If an obstacle course or the jousting ring and bungee fun run don't make more room for additional nachos, hot dogs and ice cream consumption, you can watch the cheerleading or the punt, pass and kick competition.
Marlene Maffei is the cheerleader director, and Tracey Hudson is the football director.
Maffei said this is the first year for the carnival but the program itself has been running four years.
"When it started four years ago, there were 60 kids and now there are 252," Maffei said.
It's one of the few ways the group makes money to support itself.
"Besides selling ads for the magazine we publish, this is one of the only times during the year that we can raise money for the program," Maffei said.
The program has changed into something traditionally recognizable as in boys play football and girls stand on the sidelines and wave their pom poms, but with one difference -- the program is coed, which leaves open the possibility for role reversal.
"The first two years it was only a coed no-contact flag football league and then the cheerleader portion of the program was added," Maffei said.
"We have not yet had a male try out for the cheerleading but we certainly wouldn't turn him away," Maffei said.
The program is a nonprofit organization.
