Bruce Allen Clark


1939-2006


A celebration of life is 1 p.m. Thursday for former Gardnerville resident Bruce Allen Clark, 67, at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville


Mr. Clark died from renal cell carcinoma on Aug. 1, 2006, at his home in Las Vegas.


Born Feb. 7, 1939, in Yuma County, Wray, Colo., he was raised in the Community of Christ Church and held the office of priest. He attended elementary school in Baker, Calif. He graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1956. While in high school he was a member of the baseball team, track team (discus) and the Wildcat football team. He was a football all-state selection in 1956. He was involved in leadership roles and many clubs. He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1960 from Graceland College in Iowa, where he led the varsity team in receiving and punting. He was chosen as co-captain of the team in 1958. Clark was selected as an NAIA all-district end. He received honorable mention on the Little All-American Team.


Following college, he was a member of the Kansas City Rivals Semi-Pro Football Team. Mr. Clark worked in a wide range of occupations. He was the director of admissions at Tarkio College in Missouri; he was a school teacher and coach in Missouri, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Las Vegas, where he taught at Marion E. Calen Elementary School, Rose Warren Elementary School and was the district's elementary physical education specialist. He also taught at Covelo Elementary School, Covela, Calif., Freemont Elementary School and Grace Bordewich Middle School in Carson City. He was head tennis coach at Douglas High School and Prevention-Intervention Specialist (K-6) and 5th and 6th grade basketball and track coach at Taft Elementary School, Boise, Idaho.


Mr. Clark was co-owner of Century 21 Clark Properties Real Estate Co. in Gardnerville and co-owner of several ranches. He loved raising horses, mules and cattle. He established a roping club for local horse people and he conducted living history programs about the authentic american cowboy using his western clothing, gear and his 1907 chuck wagon. He had a "mule wreck" where he received multiple skull fractures.


He was a master graduate of the Rapport Leadership Institute. He was a tennis pro at the Lakeview Racquet Club in Carson City and general manager and director of golf at the Carson City Golf and Country Club as well as competing in the 1996 Senior Olympics in Boise, Idaho, where he earned four medals. Before he retired he found a special niche in his position as salesperson working for Jack and Judy Bassett at the D Bar M Western Store in Reno.


He is survived by his wife, formerly Barbara Lea Dexter of Las Vegas; a son Tim A. Hays of Burlington, Conn.; daughter Jamie J. Clark of Carson City; sister Patsy J. Newton and brother Richard W. Hadlock both of Carson City; step-brother Lloyd Metheny Jr. of Sacramento, Calif. and half-sister Debbie Clark; step-daughters Lisa (Eagan) Williams of Ohio, Dianne Hawhee of Yerington, Jennifer Villalobos of Gardnerville and Kris Hall of Smith Valley; step-son Mark T. Eagan of Calif.; grandchildren Abby Kaplan, Taylor, Madison and Riley Hays; a large number of step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy Dean Holesapple


1941-2006


A private celebration of life will take place for Roy Dean Holesapple, 65, who died July 29, 2006, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno.


Mr. Holesapple was born Jan. 27, 1941, in Port Townsend, Wash., to Irry J. and Elena M. (Anderson) Holesapple. He has been a resident of Carson Valley since 1970 where he worked for Harvey's as a broiler cook. He then worked construction for Capital Drywall and various other construction jobs off and on for 24 years. He built the family home in 1974. He loved his garden and all the animals, he enjoyed restoring old cars and he loved building his cabin on the middle fork of the Consumnes River near Somerset, Calif.


He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara Holesapple; four children, son Ron Holesapple of Gardnerville; daughter Brenda Biskobing of Gardnerville; daughter Kathleen Holesapple of Henderson; daughter Sandra Dickey of Gardnerville; his half brother John Lange of Belfair, Wash. and five grandchildren.


Arrangements are in the care of Mt. View Mortuary in Reno, with cremation to take place at Mt. View. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Douglas Animal Welfare Group, P.O. Box 1850, Gardnerville, NV 89410




Sue Johnson


1919-2006


A memorial service is 4:30 p.m. today for Sue Johnson, 86, at FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson died Aug. 2, 2006, at Merrill Gardens in Gardnerville.


She was born Sept. 13, 1919 in Murfressboro, Tenn. to Richard and Viola Reeves. She married Odin Sigmund "Sig" Johnson on Jan. 1, 1942. His career as a park ranger led them to Yosemite National Park. Yosemite was their home for 22 years and their three children were born and raised there.


Upon retirement in 1964, they moved to Oakhurst, Calif. "Sig" died July of 1967 and Mrs. Johnson continued to maintain their home in Oakhurst until moving to Nevada in 2003 to be closer to family. She loved her family and friends and always had a pot of soup on. Her hobbies were cooking, gardening and she loved her daily walks enjoying the fresh mountain air.


She was preceded in death by her six brothers and sisters, her husband Odin S. Johnson and son Eric Sigmund Johnson. She is survived by her daughter Ingrid Rooker and son-in-law George Rooker, a daughter Julia Johnson and son-in-law Chris Crawley and daughter-in-law Rabecca Rich Johnson. Two grandchildren, Mike Rooker and Julie Knecht, four great-grandchildren Quinn Rooker, Cecily Rooker, Gage Knecht and Chase Knecht as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


Arrangements are in the care of FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home in Gardnerville. Burial will take place at the Oakhill Cemetery 11 a.m. Aug. 11 in Oakhurst, Calif. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 705 S. Wells Ave. Suite 225, Reno, NV 89502 and Barton Hospice of the Valley, 1617 Water St. Suite K, Minden, NV, 89423.


The caregivers at Merrill Gardens and nurses with hospice who helped care for Sue were all so very caring and devoted people who deserve our love, appreciation and thanks. Also, the Alzheimer's Association was of great help for support when needed.




Lloyd Gilbert Miller Jr.


1925-2006


Lloyd Gilbert Miller Jr., 81, died July 17, 2006 in Gardnerville. He was born in Pennsylvania, May 13, 1925 to Lloyd G. Miller Sr. and Carrie Hall. He lived in Albuquerque from 1957 to 2002 when he moved to Gardnerville. He was an experimental machinist for Sandia National Laboratory and he was a veteran of World War II.


He is survived by a son, David Miller of Reno and a sister, Jean Spring of Florida.




Francis Donald Petite


1923-2006


A graveside service is 11 a.m. today for Francis Donald Petite, 82, at Eastside Memorial Park Cemetery in Gardnerville.


Mrs. Petite died Aug. 3, 2006, in Gardnerville.


Mr. Petite was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Superior, Wis., to Joseph and Martha Petite. He married his wife Dorthy in March of 1943. Before moving to Gardnerville he was a resident of Fullerton, Calif. He spent his career in engineering design for Hughs Aircraft in Southern California. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fullerton, Calif.


He was preceded in death by his wife Dorthy Petite on July 8, 2006, in Fullerton, Calif.


He is survived by his son Duane and daughter-in-law Pamela of Gardnerville; three grandchildren Ethan and wife Kelly Petite, Sarah and husband John Curtis, Jennifer and husband Mark Johnson as well as two great-grandchildren Maya Petite and Hannah Johnson.


Arrangements are in the care of Walton's Douglas County Mortuary. Cremation to take place at Walton's Sierra Crematory in Carson City.




Jack Walter Shelley


1912-2006


A celebration of life is 11 a.m. Aug. 21 for Jack Walter Shelley, 93, at Round Hill Pines Beach. Mr. Shelley died July 22, 2006, at his home in Reno.


Born Dec. 11, 1912, in Coldwater, Kan., he came to Nevada in the 1930s and worked for Pettes in Reno. He then went to the Denver School of Pharmacy. In the early 1940s he was partners in his first pharmacy in Hawthorne. He sold out after being drafted into the Navy in 1942, where he became a pharmacist's mate. After the war, he opened a store in Minden. In 1948 he started Stateline Pharmacy in Harvey's Wagon Wheel at Lake Tahoe. He commuted Kingsbury Grade when it was still dirt and only in the summer until he moved his family to Lake Tahoe in 1951.


He had the first drug store in Lake Tahoe. He later became partners with his nephew Rudy Shelley in Shelley's Bijou Drug. He had the pharmacy in Tahoe City and a sundries store at Zephyr Cove. He loved Lake Tahoe. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved his family, friends and his dogs.


He is survived by his daughter Cheryl of Truckee, Calif.; son Robert of Reno; grandson Robert; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.


He was preceded in death by wife Catherine; one brother, and nine sisters.
