Handicapped parking fines increase

Volunteer Citizen Patrol officers from the Douglas County Sheriff's Department are in the process of updating the handicap parking signs to reflect an increase in the fine amount.

The minimum fine for illegally parking in a spot reserved for use by those in possession of a valid handicap-parking permit has risen to $250 plus an administrative fee of $97.

Citizen patrol officers will be placing stickers on signs throughout the county to reflect these changes.

Granted authority by Nevada Revised Statutes, citizen patrol officers will issue criminal citations to those found parked in these reserved spaces without the proper permit.

Drivers are asked not to park in the handicap spaces, even momentarily, unless they have been issued a permit to do so and those drivers in possession of valid permits are reminded to properly display the permit on the rearview mirror when parked in these reserved spaces.
