Douglas County Commission chairman Jim Baushke is resting comfortably at Carson Valley Medical Center, after a cat scan revealed a series of clots on his lungs on Dec. 9.

He has been hospitalized at the Center since the clots were discovered.

As chairman, Baushke oversaw a grueling two-day commission meeting Dec. 6 and 7. During that period, his chest hurt so bad when he tried to lay down that that he could not sleep, said his wife, Donna Baushke.

By 10:30 a.m. the annual Share Your Holiday Food Drive was already breaking records.

The annual event had already collected 6,800 pounds of food and $7,400 in donations.

"This is the first year where we've had more money than pounds of food," organizer Len Frueh. "We've had several $500 donations and one $800 donation. Many of them are from past recipients who've been there and want to give something back."

"We're off to a fantastic start," he said.

The food drove is sponsored by KTVN Channel 2 and the Carson Valley Inn. Drive-through donations will be accepted through 6 p.m., though organizer and KTVN Chief Photographer Sherrie Cerutti said the television crews will stay until 7 p.m. to do their report and perhaps collect some donations from stragglers.

Drug paraphernalia including hundreds of glass pipes, several water pipes, digital scales and hashish grinders were seized Thursday from two Carson Valley liquor stores.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported that no arrests were made pending a review by the District Attorney's office.

Sale of drug paraphernalia is a Category E felony.

A store manager for Lucky Liquor declined comment. The manager at Rancho Liquors could not be reached.

The sheriff's office Street Enforcement Team was tipped to the paraphernalia sales by a Douglas High School student arrested on campus for distributing marijuana.

Ruhenstroth residents are expected to turn out 6 p.m. tonight to discuss the transfer of water rights to a well in their neighborhood to serve an industrial park. Project owner Peter Beekhof purchased water rights from Minden as required and is transferring them to the county's well in Ruhenstroth. Residents fear the transfer will draw down their wells, forcing them to drill deeper or connect to a county water system. The meeting is at the Ruhenstroth Volunteer Fire Department on Pinto Circle.
