Paula Chung is a fiber artist who has been perfecting her craft for the past several years. She has been in numerous exhibits in Southern California and the Lake Tahoe area and received several awards for her work.
Chung photographs her garden's flowers and believes her approach to the subject matter produces an uncommon, yet intriguing result. The size of her work creates an altogether different image of the flower than the original life-size bloom that inspired the piece.
"My gardens provide a source of inspiration and solace. My pieces try to capture a blossom's essence; its energy. Through the use of my photographs, a very personal message is sought," said Chung.
Hand-dyed/painted and commercially dyed silk is appliquéd without the use of fusible agents. A cotton/polyester batting is used and all is quilted then backed. Monofilament thread is used in the stitching and quilting process.
"In endeavoring to make the common, uncommon, I hope you will join me in experiencing the flower's beauty," said Chung.
Chung's work will be available for sale at Artisans International Gallery the entire month of January. An artist reception will be held 3-5 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 1653 Lucerne St.. in Minden, at the Minden Village center. Gallery owner, Bronwyn Mason, promotes fiber artists and weavers from around the world.
"The Carson Valley is a very active art community and the fiber artists are no exception," said Mason. "Paula is our first local fiber artist and I am excited to have her join the family of artists and present her work to the community."
