What started as a simple idea to get people outdoors in the slow midsummer months has come full-circle to earn honors from the Nevada Recreation & Parks Society.
The first White Lightning Wiffleball Tournament, which was conducted in late July last summer at Stodick Park, won a Program Excellence Award at the 2006 Nevada Recreation & Parks Society conference in Reno recently.
J.P. Albert, recreation coordinator for Douglas County, developed and implemented the plan for the tournament.
"The tournament was a way to reintroduce a backyard child's game while providing a positive leisure time activity," Douglas recreation supervisor Sheryl Christian said.
The tournament consisted of nine teams of four to six players each, with eight teams advancing to the championship bracket.
Albert said he anticpates expanding the tournament this year to include a youth and teen division.
