County commissioner candidates for districts 2 and 4 will be speaking before the Douglas County Republican Women at the Carson Valley Inn. They're charging $18 at the door and lunch begins at noon. This will be an early chance to hear Janet Murphy and Nancy McDermid, both of whom appear on the Aug. 15 primary ballot. David Brady and Lloyd Higuera are running for District 2, but won't appear on the ballot until November.

Today is the last day to sign up for the Douglas County Public Library Tahoe Rim Trail hike for children on Saturday. It is also the last day to sign up for the Genoa Summer Swap Meet. For the hike, contact the library at 782-9841. For the swap meet, call the town office at 782-8696.

It will be breezy today with the wind picking up in the afternoon. The National Weather Service is predicting winds of 17 mph with gusts of up to 29 mph. The sun will be shining and the high temperature is predicted to reach 89 degrees.

On Saturday, Mormon Station State Historic Park will open after being closed since early last spring. They've redone the fort to include bathrooms, changed the walkways and generally improved the place for the better.
