Lots happening in Antelope Valley

To introduce myself - My name is Lynne Katusich. My husband, Mike, and I moved to the Antelope Valley almost two years ago. For over 40 years I was in the title and escrow business, with my own escrow coordinating business for the last 11 years. When it was time to retire, we couldn't think of any place we would rather live. We love the scenery, fishing and almost anything to do with the outdoors. Through this column, I'll try to give you the information you want and need as residents of the valley. n Candidate's Night

Tonight is the night to meet the five candidates for Mono Co. Sheriff and hear what they would like to accomplish if elected. From 6-7 p.m. will be a chance to meet them and to fill out forms with any questions you have for them. From 7-9 p.m. the candidates will make brief statements, and there will be a formal Q & A session. This will be at the Walker Community Center. You can also register to vote if not already registered.

n Antelope Valley Regional Planning Advisory Committee

At the last RPAC meeting on April 6, Evan Nikirk of County Public Works gave us information about the disposal site fees. There will be an increase of 25 cents to the gate fee (from $1.25 to $1.50). Certain other fees will be raised slightly, depending on the type and quantity of material being dumped. The change will take effect June 1. The next RPAC meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Walker Community Center. As always, the public is encouraged to attend these meetings and have a say in the future of our valley.

n Antelope Valley Fire Commission

The commission took resumes until May 2 from in-house applicants to interview to become the new fire chief. Their next regular meeting will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the fire station in Walker. This meeting will be open to the public.

n Spring Fling 2006

The Annual Spring Fling will be May 20-21. This event will be a flea market, craft fair and raffle for some big prizes. Information call 530-495-9666 regarding a booth reservation.

n Good news! Our long-time mail carrier, Pam Chichester, is back on the job. She said she is feeling better every day and wants to thank everyone for the flowers, cards and calls she received during her convalescence

n Fishing season opened Saturday. We'll hope for a great year on the river for all.

n Belated birthday wishes to Eleanor Davis for her 99th birthday. What a milestone.

n As previously noted, all of our local restaurants are open. The schedules at this time are:

Walker Burger - open daily except Wednesday

Mountain View Barbecue - As of May 4 open daily except Tuesday and Wednesday

Sierra Retreat - Open daily except Tuesday

Meadowcliff - Breakfast and lunch daily, dinner Friday and Saturday

NayDawg's - Breakfast and lunch Thursday through Sunday, dinner Friday

n It seems like the right time, with gas prices what they are, to network with friends and neighbors to maximize our trips to town. We can either trade off doing small errands for each other or drive together to town. Every little bit will help. Another effect of the high gas prices seems to be a return of gas siphoning. There were many reported instances of it in the valley this weekend. It might be time to invest in locking gas caps.
