Douglas improves playoff hopes with win



The Douglas softball team saw its playoff hopes drastically improve Monday afternoon, picking up a 5-4 win over Wooster.


Mitzi Olsen pitched a complete game, striking out eight and walking four while allowing six hits.


Douglas also saw a tremendous breakout on offense, collecting 11 hits as a team.


Donna Judd went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Lauren Hoppe doubled with an RBI and Felicia Imelli and Angela Stephenson each had RBIs.


Tisha Luken, Morgan Barone, Kayla Moore, Skyler Zulian and Stephanie Harper each had one hit.


The win evened both teams at 12-7 in league play. Both are fighting with Damonte Ranch for the third and fourth playoff spots in the league, although Douglas holds the upper hand in the race with the win against Wooster.

The Lady Tigers closed out the season Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader at Wooster. The results of those games will be in Friday's R-C.


Last week, Harper tossed her second no-hitter in as many starts against Hug Friday afternoon as Douglas picked up a 10-0 win in Sierra League play.


Harper, who no-hit Hug three weeks ago in Reno, struck out four and walked two in picking up the win.


Zulian and Hoppe each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win and Olsen, Imelli, Luken and Harper each drove in a run as well.


Saturday, a pair of runs in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth afforded No. 3 Reno a 4-1 win in the first game of a league doubleheader against the Tigers.


Olsen struck out two and scattered eight hits in seven innings in taking the loss. Judd went 2-for-4 to lead the Tigers at the plate and drove in Douglas' only run of the game.


Barone and Olsen each had a hit as well.


In the second game of the doubleheader, Reno scored six runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 14-3 win.

Freshman Samantha Puzey, who attended Carson Valley Middle School last year, doubled, homered and drove in six runs for Reno.


Hoppe and Zulian each went 2-for-2. Hoppe doubled and Zulian drove in two runs.


Olsen had an RBI and Luken collected a hit.

The Lady Tigers remained unbeaten on the year, picking up a 9-4 win over Reno last week.


Danelle Freitas pitched the entire game with seven strikeouts, giving up six hits.


Marina Diaz homered, Mackenzie Cauley had two singles, Chloe Trudell singled and doubled, Emmy Frank collected three hits and Freitas, Dorothy Sliva and Christine Ward had one single.

Sliva led the Tigers with two RBIs and Trudell, Frank, Diaz and Freitas each had one RBI.


Douglas completed the sweep of Reno Saturday, picking up 7-0 and 11-1 wins.


Freitas pitched both games for the Tigers, striking out 14 in the first and seven in the second.


Cauley and Paiement each had two singles in the first game and Katie Gettman and Trudell each had one single.


Gettman had two RBIs and Trudell had one.


In the second game, Ward and Gettman each hit home runs, Diaz had two hits and Cauley, Frank, Freitas, Megan Michitarian and Trudell each had one hit.


Ward and Diaz each had three RBIs.


Douglas has outscored its opponents 264-27 on its way to a 18-0 record.
