New bar opens in Gardnerville

Someone who's been here a few years might remember that the bar most recently known as McDuffy's, and previously Jezebel's, had been the popular hangout for people who wanted to listen to David John and the Comstock Cowboys. What was once known as Buckaroo's Saloon is Buckaroo's once again.

It was at least 10 years ago when general manager Steve Orlando ran the Buckaroo's bar for his friends, and after it closed, he always hoped it would reopen as a saloon that could capture the same country attitude.

"There hasn't been a country/western bar in Douglas County in a long time and we decided to target that market," Orlando said.

In plans to bring country music back to the Gardnerville area, Buckaroo's offer bands from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Wednesdays are karaoke nights.

The interior of the bar has been re-done from painting and refinishing the floors to creating a new bar - complete with the longhorns from the original Buckaroo's.

Orlando ended up with the 100-year-old set of horns after the first saloon closed and had them hanging in his house.

"It was his dream to reopen Buckaroo's so he hung on to the horns," said owner Barbara Marchand. "They're lucky horns. Business has gone well wherever they've been."

Orlando has been involved in running a bar off and on for 25 years and he and Marchand talked about starting their own business together.

"I do quite well at running day-to-day operations," said Orlando. "Barbara and I spoke about it and it's something we always wanted to do."

Marchand worked as a cafeteria cook at Douglas High School for 18 years.

"I enjoy working with people and serving people," said Marchand. "We will have food at lunch: sandwiches, salads, nachos, hot dogs, chili and soup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We wanted to have a low-key bar without the casino atmosphere, someplace fun, somewhere to enjoy yourself."

Buckaroo's is having a grand opening event starting at 5 p.m. Nov. 17 with drink specials and entertainment by 5-piece traditional country band, Doce Doe. The band will play from 8 p.m. to midnight, Nov. 17 and 18.

Buckaroos is at 1435 Highway in Gardnerville and opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. For more information, 782-9693.
