Officials: Budget cuts would force Douglas campus closure

The Douglas County campus of Western Nevada College would be "forced to close and mothball" if Gov. Jim Gibbons' 8 percent budget cuts were implemented over the next biennium, according to Nevada higher education officials.

The Nevada System of Higher Education published impact statements for all the system's colleges and university on its Web site. The documents were sent to Gibbons on Dec. 7.

"WNC would be forced to close and mothball the Douglas County college campus and move out of the Carson City High Tech Center and ask the (Carson City) school district to assume all the obligations of the entire building operational budge for the remainder of the biennium," the statement read.

WNC also would be forced to shut down the four rural centers in Yerington, Hawthorne, Fernley and Lovelock, according to the document.

The documents are available on the Nevada System of Higher Education Web site, www.nevada.edu.
