Video is tribute to Nevada's oldest ranching families

A special Exploring Nevada program focusing on two families who have worked the land in Nevada for over a century will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 18 at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

The program includes a video visit with the Scossa family, Carson Valley ranchers since 1885, and southern Nevada dairy farmer Roger Bunker, whose great grandfather founded the town of Bunkerville in 1877. Cowboy entertainer Tumbleweed Tex will provide some genuine western entertainment following the video. The cost is free. The Wilbur D. May Museum is located in the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra St., Reno. For information, call 785-4512.

State's centennial ranching families

As a tribute to those who continue to maintain Nevada's rich ranching heritage, the State Historic Preservation Office initiated the Centennial Ranch and Farm Awards in 2004 along with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, Nevada Farm Bureau, Natural Resources, Conservation Services, Nevada Cattleman's Association and the Ag Council.

To qualify for this award, a family must have worked the same property for 100 years or more. Twenty-nine families have been honored so far.
