Planning commissioners approve zoning map for Hillbilly casino

The Douglas County Planning Commission approved the zoning map amendment to allow for construction of the Beverly Hillbillies Mansion & Resort this morning.

Still on the table are the unrestricted gaming license and a host of code variances that the planning commission will tackle this afternoon.

At their regular June meeting, planning commissioners split 3-3 over the zoning change that would allow construction of the casino.

Citing a previous commitment, the seventh member of the Planning Commission, Lawrence Howell, excused himself from the proceedings at 5:30 p.m., about an hour before the decision.

Commission Chairman Bob Conner gave casino developers the option of forwarding the project to the Board of County Commissioners, or a re-hearing with planning commissioners in July.

Project officials opted for the latter.

The special use permit allows for unrestricted gaming use on 15.8 acres in Riverwood, a proposed commercial district on 97 acres in north Douglas County.

The project includes a 40,000-square-foot gaming area with 800 slots and 16 tables, a showroom, cinema complex and five-story, 240-room hotel in almost 300,000 square feet.

Variances are required for a proposed 200-foot flameless oil derrick and readerboard. Two 12-story, 240-room hotel towers and convention space are scheduled for future phases and will also need approval from the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.
