The R-C Morning Report

Two major projects along the Douglas-Carson line go before the Douglas County Planning Commission this afternoon. Big George Ventures is seeking a tentative subdivision map on property purchased in November 2005 from the BLM to build 364 residences. Also on the 1 p.m. agenda is Max Baer's Beverly Hillbillies Mansion and Resort a 12-story hotel casino on property directly across Highway 395 from Wal-Mart. Big George is opposing the casino project and has posted a Web site at www.nohillbillies.com, Baer's project is described at www.jethroscasino.com.

The sentencing of a teenaged former military policeman accused of selling cocaine at Stateline is 9 a.m. today in Judge Dave Gamble's Minden court. Elliot P. Liebowitz , 18, faces up to 15 years in prison, but a deal with prosecutors will reduce his sentence to 3-5 years. Liebowitz was 17 when he was arrested by narcotics officers in January. His Nevada National Guard uniform was hanging up in the car when he was taken into custody.

It will be clear and fairly still today as the mercury climbs to 87 degrees and the breeze is at 8-11 mph. Tonight the low is predicted to drop to 48 degrees. High pressure is building over the southwest that promises to keep temperatures in the 90s.

Looking at the water year so far for 2006-07, Minden has received just 59 percent of its average moisture, so far this year. If not another drop or flake fell until Oct. 1, we would have received 50 percent of the moisture typical during the water year. On the mountain, it's up to 62 or 63 percent of the average for the year. That means stream flows on the Carson are already drying up and some ranchers will be relying on their wells to keep their fields green and feeding cows.
