Bands and choral groups shine in spring concerts

The Douglas High School band and choral groups received superior and excellent ratings at the Music in the Parks competition in Santa Clara, Calif., on April 27.

The choral groups, including the concert choir, Madrigals and Image jazz choir, all received first place and superior ratings. All choir groups were rated superior in every competition they have attended this spring.

The concert band earned a second-place and excellent rating while the jazz band was first place with a good rating. The concert and jazz bands also received superior ratings at the Northern Zone Nevada Music Educators Association festival in March, bringing home a total of 67 band awards this season.

The music and choral groups will be performing in a series of concerts this spring, including a whirlwind tour of all the Valley's schools in two days.

-- The Image jazz choir and Madrigals will perform at the DHS Spring Art Fair 6-9 a.m. May 9 in the Douglas High School media center.

-- Concert band and Madrigals will perform their 22nd Annual Whirlwind Concert Tour of Douglas County schools May 21 and 22.

-- All choral groups from Douglas High and Carson Valley and Pau-Wa-Lu middle schools perform the "Sounds of Spring" concert, 7 p.m. May 24 at DHS. Guest soloist is soprano Jennifer Zabelsky. $3 donation.

-- The "Semper Fidelis" concert features concert and jazz bands from Douglas High and Carson Valley and Pau-Wa-Lu middle schools, 7 p.m. May 31 at DHS. $3 donation.
