Pony Express coming

Saturday is the day for the Historic Emigrant Trail Barn Tour. The tour starts at 9 a.m. and you will need to have your ticket in hand when you arrive at each barn. Don't forget to bring your tickets - you don't want to have to head back home to get them. If you don't have a ticket yet, call 782-2555 and pick yours up today.

As you know, the deadline for entering the May photo contest is 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 31. You may enter by dropping off your photo at the Gardnerville museum any time before then or by emailing your entry directly to in2my2cats@yahoo.com. The contest entry forms are available both at the museum and on line at the historical society Web site. Don't be too concerned about the entry forms. Submitting your photo is more important. We can take care of the paperwork later.

Upcoming June events include Student-Senior Day, June 7, which will feature Douglas County Historical Society volunteer Laurie Hickey portraying Clara Martin Hawkins, wife of Theodore Perry Hawkins, noted Genoa Pony Express rider. The lecture series on June 12 will feature Dale Ryan, past president of the Pony Express. The horse Bob Moore will ride in the June 19 re-ride will be in the parking lot for all to see. Both of these events take place at the Gardnerville museum. Admission for students and seniors on Student-Senior Day and all lecture goers is free.

This summer we are offering you the opportunity to join in the fun at the Douglas County Historical Society Swap Meets. Swap meets are a great summer outing in many parts of the West and we thought it was time to start them here. We will be renting booth space to any and all who wish to sell items at the Gardnerville museum site. Rental is $10 and each booth is approximately 10 feet by 10 feet.

There are a couple of restrictions on what may be sold; see the application for complete rules and restrictions.

These swap meets will start in June on June 21, and again on June 28. The swap meets will continue on July 12 and 26, August 9 and 23, and Sept. 13 and 27. This swap meet has great Highway 395 visibility. Everyone driving by will see it and want to stop and browse. We all know how impossible it is to resist a good bargain.

Start to plan your booth space now; June will be here before we know it. Application forms for booth space are available at the Gardnerville museum and should be on our website soon. Even if you are not up to selling, you won't want to miss out on these shopping opportunities.

Remember, DCHS and its two museums do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
