Bill's casino will close Jan. 4

After 22 years of operation, Bill's Lake Tahoe Casino in Stateline will close on Jan. 4, according to an internal memo from Harrah's and Harveys Lake Tahoe.

The casino, Bar 24 Tap Room & Grill and Lake Monster Tattoo located on Lake Tahoe Boulevard between the MontBleu Casino Resort and Spa and Harrah's will all close after the new year.

The decision came after a "consistent downward trend in the business levels at Bill's over the past several years," according to the memo from John Koster, Harrah's regional president for Northern Nevada.

"The decision to close Bill's Casino was made after careful consideration and analysis," Koster wrote in the memo. "It is part of a broader strategy that we believe will position Harrah's and Harveys Lake Tahoe to be even stronger as we navigate through and emerge through the current recession."

Harrah's is "working closely" with the 11 Bill's employees to find them positions elsewhere in the company, Spokesman John Packer said.

The company will discuss what to do with the building after Jan. 4, Packer added.

Stateline is the source for most of Douglas County's gaming revenue and a substantial portion of sales tax.
