An honor just to be nominated

Editor:

As a recent runner-up for the Governor's Point of Light Award, I first want to say that Edward Feinhandler, the winner in the senior division, certainly deserved it for his decades long making blood donations and promoting the blood bank.

I'm just sorry I didn't get the chance to publicly thank my 82 volunteer tutors who have made the ESL in-home program the success it has been over the last five years. So here goes: Thank you, tutors, each and every one of you. You are definitely making a difference and are part of the solution. To date, 43 students have become U.S. citizens with your help, just to name one of the many successes.

And now we'll take a short commercial break: I need more tutors. There are over 100 non-English speaking potential students on a waiting list who live in Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden, Reno, Sparks and Dayton.

It is not required to have a knowledge of a foreign language to teach English; nor do you need teaching experience. Training in the Laubach method takes one hour at no charge; commitment is for 1-2 hours a week; all materials are provided at no charge to tutor and student.  The program is free to all. You will be matched with a student near you on the days and times you are available.

For more information, either call me at (775) 888-2021 or e-mail me at pfphillaway@aol.com.

You are needed. Make a difference in your community. Be part of the solution.
