Thanks for supporting symposium

Editor:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the community organizations and Douglas County schools that contributed to a very successful parent symposium recently held at Douglas High School.

An estimated 400 parents filled the Douglas High School commons eager for more tools to place in their parent toolbox. They received current, valuable information from presenters and community resources. Many thanks to the following presenters: Jodi Wass and Pete Nelson from the Suicide Prevention Network for their presentation on suicide prevention and awareness; Jamie Wise and Mindy Borchers from the Family Support Council for healthy relationships and parenting tips; Teri Clark and Sgt. Dan Britton for drug awareness; and to the FBI and the Children's Cabinet for presenting Internet safety. Additionally, these community organizations enriched the symposium with their resource tables:

- 211 (Get Connected. Get Answers)

- Army One Source Community Support

- Big Brothers Big Sisters

- Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada

- Carson Valley Trails Association

- Douglas High School Parent Teacher Student Organization

- Douglas County Sheriff's Office - Drug Awareness - DARE and GREAT

- Douglas Mental Health

- Drug Use is Life Abuse

- Foster Care Licensing

- Juvenile Probation Office

- MADD

- Minden Elementary PTO

- Partnership of Community Resources

- Tahoe Youth & Family Services

- The Solace Tree

- Washoe Native Youth Resource Center

- Washoe Tribe Healing Center

We would also like to offer special thanks to Channel 4 and The Record-Courier for all the great coverage, Teri Clark for the endless hours to make this event happen, and the Partnership of Community Resources for partnering with Douglas County School District to support the symposium. This evening was very successful due to the willingness of the community to come together and network.
