Swimming: Douglas claims boys', girls' Zephyr League titles

In their first meet since Molly Lahlum died in a medical episode suffered at the Carson Swim Center at the end of March, the Douglas High swim team did their former teammate proud.

The Tigers won both the girls' and boys' Zephyr League championships in dominating fashion Saturday.

The girls' team won its meet by 150 points over second-place Reed while the boys' squad won by 111 points over second-place Manogue.

In total, the Tigers claimed 12 championships in the individual events.

Eric Vanbeuge had a career day, winning the 100 backstroke (58.53), the 100 freestyle (52.66) and swimming a leg on the winning 200 free relay along with Chris Bergstrum, Ryan Dykes and Colby Cain.

Cain won the 50 free (23.14) followed closely in second by Bergstrum 23.66 and Eddie Koller remained unbeaten in diving on the year, winning his competition with 471.70 points. Douglas' Thomas Asher took second in the diving at 298.55.

On the girls' side, Haley Von Schottenstein won the 100 fly (1:00.44) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.37).

Michelle Forman (200 IM, 2:20.78), Mary Smithen (50 free, 26.47) and Aleassa Anzelone (diving, 265.85) won individual league titles as well.

Von Schottenstein, Smithen, Forman and Taylor Killion teamed to win both the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Von Schottenstein will enter this weekend's Northern 4A Regional championships with the top times in both the 50 free (26.19) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.37). Her time in the breaststroke is nearly three seconds faster than her closest competition.

The regional trials are Saturday at the University of Nevada and the finals are Saturday.
