Melodrama tickets on sale

This may be the slow time of year, but we at the Douglas County Historical Society have a whole lot in store for you. Come on over to the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville and see what we have going on.

The exhibit committee has been busy moving and replacing exhibits as we have repainted a lot of the exhibit space. Now everything looks new and shiny, except the exhibits of course.

The "Hotel Minden II" melodrama is well into rehearsals. Make sure you have tickets for the Jan. 29-31 performances as they usually sell out. Tickets are $25 each for the Friday and Saturday dinner performances. If you are a DCHS member, or join now, your ticket will only be $20. Tickets for the Sunday matinee are $15 for all. Call 782-2555 to reserve tickets.

Young Chautauqua began this week. If you and your child missed the introductory meeting, call 782-2555 and ask for Grace. She can probably still fit you into the program. Research on individual historical characters and rehearsals for performances will begin soon, so call today.

Nominating forms are available at the Gardnerville museum for the annual Women In History Award. Your choice needs to be a woman who has lived in Douglas County at some point in her life and has contributed to the quality of life here. Call 782-2555 for information.

Our January photo contest is underway. Send us your photo of what January looks like in Douglas County. You can bring it to the museum or e-mail it to the address below by 4 p.m. Jan. 30. We will announce the winner Feb. 5.

The Endowment Funding Seminar is 7-8 p.m. Feb. 10 in the main gallery of the Gardnerville museum, given by estate planning specialist Dick Stoelzing. This seminar is a must for those who wish to understand the importance of wealth transfer and estate planning issues. We'll have more information in future columns. Everyone is invited, but space is limited. Please call Cindy at 782-2555 to reserve your seat.

Do any of you have extra time on your hands? Do you want to do more with it than the latest crossword or Sudoku puzzle? Call us at 782-2555 or come on in and volunteer at the Gardnerville museum. Membership in DCHS is easy and working around the museum is a lot of fun. There is always something going on and there are always new people to meet. Come join us this year.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
