Sports Briefs for Friday, Jan. 15

The Douglas Youth Basketball League put on by the Douglas High boys' and girls' basketball programs will not be held Saturday due to the teams' games in Reno.

It will resume Jan. 23 and continue every Saturday through Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at the high school.

The Carson Valley Middle School volleyball teams opened their season last week against Carson.

The Tiger seventh-graders beat Carson 25-14, 20-25, 15-8. Ariah Barth had four service points, Corrine Millett had three service points, Gabby Vega had six service points and Alexis Von Schottenstein had 16 service points.

The eighth-graders won 25-22, 10-25, 16-14.

Shelby VanWinkle had eight service points, Emily Gosselin had four, Mikaela Wendler had four and Anna Lekumberry had three.

The Tigers hosted Alder Creek on Tuesday with the seventh-graders winning 25-19, 25-16 and the eighth-graders losing 18-25, 25-17, 14-16.

In the seventh-grade match, Vega and Shayla Gransbery had six service points each, Kealy Moss had four, Tiffany Fiedler had three and Emily Schmidt, Von Schottenstein and Allie Galloway each had two.

In the eighth-grade match, Maddy Strauss had seven service points, one assist and a kill, VanWinkle had four service points, five assists and a kill, Mikaela Wendler had five service points, one assist and three kills, Justin Dale had four service points, three assists and a kill, Samantha Brown had four service points and a kill, Jessa Gansberg had three service points and a kill, Anna Lekumberry had eight service points and Tia Lutz had one service point and an assist.

The Douglas High softball program will conduct voluntary conditioning sessions every Monday and Wednesday in January and February from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Cougars baseball facility near the Airport at 2222 Park Place, Building 3, Suite A.

Players must bring completed insurance and information forms with them, or they will not be allowed to work out. Forms are available at the Tiger Cage.

Players should also bring a glove, bat, helmet, tennis shoes (no cleats) and water or a sports drink. Dress in layers in case they go outside for a run.

Tryouts are scheduled for Feb. 27.

The Carson Valley Girls Softball Association will hold sign-ups for the 2010 season at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation annex building across from Lampe Park on Jan. 23 (noon to 3 p.m.), Feb. 4 (6 to 8 p.m.), Feb. 18 (6 to 8 p.m.) and Feb. 20 (2-6 p.m.).

Cost is $65 (ages 5-7), $70 (8-older) and $150 maximum (family rate). A $10 discount will be given to those signing up on Jan. 23.

New players must bring birth certificates. Returning players should bring completed registration forms they received in the mail.

Players must be at least years old and no more than 18 years old as of Jan. 1, 2010.
