Baseball: Tigers launch monster comeback for win

The Douglas American Legion baseball team fell far behind early against Damonte Ranch Tuesday before a furious rally in the bottom of the fifth propelled the Tigers to a 14-9 win.

"They really showed some character," said assistant coach Bob Rudnick. "They battled and put up a couple runs here or there.

"Then they put up a nine-spot in the fifth to come back and win the thing. It wasn't the prettiest game, but everyone played and they showed the ability to come back from a big hole."

Cody Begovich led the offensive attack with four hits while Rudnick said Damonte wasn't able to find a way to get Tanner Egan out all afternoon.

Walker Gemmill, Kameron Van Winkle and Cody Lommori all had multiple hits in the game.

Douglas improved to 10-5 on the summer with the win.

The Tigers will compete in the 13-team Sierra Sundevils Fourth of July Tournament through the weekend. They played the Washington Manor Ports at Carson High on Thursday.

The Tigers play the Oakland Oaks today at noon at Carson High and bracket play begins Saturday with the championship round Sunday.

Douglas took second place in the Damonte Ranch tournament last weekend.

The Tigers opened the weekend with a 10-0 win over Reed followed by a 4-3 win over Manogue.

Against Reed, every Tiger started recorded a hit and Kyle Johnson pitched a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Cole Peck threw 6 1/3 innings against Manogue while Austin Evans picked up the save.

James Herrick hit his second home run of the year and Joe Almeida hit a triple.

Douglas tied Elko 10-10 on Saturday as Nolan Weintz pitched the majority of the game before giving way to Herrick.

Chase White and Evans were each got hit twice.

Douglas beat Damonte Ranch 15-11 Sunday getting strong pitching from Dalton Grissell and Herrick. Herrick added three hits.

In the championship game, Douglas gave up four runs in the first and then got a strong relief performance out of White, losing 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh.

"All in all, they guys competed just as well as I've ever seen a JV baseball team compete," coach Stormy Herald said. "There was tremendous leadership from all the sophomores, but especially Chase White, Nolan Weintz, Dusty Fisher and Jimmy King.

"The younger players are responding better than I could have hoped for. The players who see limited playing time are major contributors to the success of this team through their selflessness and commitment to the team."
