Hungry thief takes beef jerky, energy drinks

Sentencing was deferred Monday for one year for a 20-year-old Gardnerville man who admitted stealing beef jerky and energy drinks from a grocery store because he said he was hungry.

Brandon Jay Probert was arrested July 16 at Scolari's, where he formerly worked, after an employee recognized him and watched him take the items worth $16.96.

She watched him pick up two packages of beef jerky and two energy drinks which he stashed in a backpack. He paid for one drink at the checkout.

Probert reportedly told deputies he was homeless and hungry. He had no cash, debit or credit cards in his wallet.

Probert originally was charged with burglary, but pleaded guilty to petty larceny.

East Fork Justice Jim EnEarl delayed sentencing for one year. If Probert stays out of trouble, he will be allowed to withdraw his plea.
