Farewell, Big Tiny Little

EDITOR:

March 3 we lost a bright and shining star in the world of music. Big Tiny Little who played piano like no other, left this world to brighten the heavens with his special brand of piano playing. Often known as having the fastest hands on the keyboard, he entertained so many Nevadans over the years.

Born on August 31, 1930, in Worthington, Minn., to musically talented parents, he started playing piano at 4 years of age. He is probably best known for his years with the Lawrence Welk television show. But Tiny entertained all over the USA. He was in the U.S. military band overseas, he played Carnegie Hall and jazz festivals throughout the country.

He opened the Colorado Belle Casino in Laughlin. He rubbed elbows with so many stars such as Frank Sinatra, Pete Fountain and a myriad of others during his lifetime of playing. He loved jazz and was even honored as the emperor of the Sacramento Jazz Festival which he played yearly. He continued to play with the Welk family in their theaters across the country.

Wherever he played, people would come to him and tell him of their experiences of listening and dancing to his music in almost every state over the years. His music would prompt their long forgotten memories. He loved to play to his audience and welcomed requests. Tiny, as he was known to his friends, was also a singer and songwriter. He was very dedicated to his music and generous to his audiences.

Perhaps he is not known as well to the younger generations, but most seniors have heard him play in one place or another. We are lucky to have had him among us living and playing such places as in Reno at Fitzgerald's, The Nugget and outdoor concerts. He played the Carson Nugget, Carson Station, Gold Dust West and locally at the Carson Valley Inn and at many local events.

He was a giant in the music world as well as being a giant of a man in heart. Those who have had the privilege of knowing him as a neighbor, friend and icon will truly miss him and his music. May his star shine even brighter in heaven.
