New deputies join sheriff's office

Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini administered oaths of office Monday to two new deputies.

Samantha Bias, 22, is a full-time deputy sheriff.

She recently earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice from University of Nevada, Reno, where she played softball.

Bias is the daughter of Sgt. Steve Bias, a 27-year veteran police officer with the Antioch, Calif., police department. Her mother, Sue Bias, also attended the ceremony.

The new deputy was pinned by her father.

Cory Gonzales, 24, was hired as a reserve deputy sheriff.

He is a graduate of the Reserve Law Enforcement Academy at UNR.

Gonzales is in the U.S. Marine Corps, assigned to the Mountain Warfare Training Center at Pickel Meadow.

He has served two deployments in Iraq.

Gonzales and his wife Sallie have a 2-month-old daughter, Kaleigh.

He was pinned by his wife.
