Golf: Wurster wins Sierra League tournament

Douglas High senior Bethany Wurster continued her strong start to the 2010 season, winning the Sierra League Tournament at Empire Ranch Tuesday with a score of 71.

The Tigers took fourth as a team (394) behind Carson (349), Manogue (355) and Galena (387).

"The team improved dramatically this week," Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said. "They improved over 40 strokes (from the season-opening tournament at Thunder Canyon). It was a windy day, but they kept it together and shot some great scores.

"For some players, the win added five to 10 strokes. We were only seven strokes behind third-place Galena."

Tawnie Wentz shot a 96, Emily Gosselin shot a 11 and Devyn Hotho shot a 116 to round out the team score while Molly Jordan and Megan Welch showed improvement for the Tigers as well.

Douglas will be at Wolf Run next Tuesday for the Damonte Ranch tournament.
