Annual Critical Issues Conference slated for Tuesday

The game has changed. Are you ready?

This is what the Business Council of Douglas County is asking people in preparation for their 16th annual Critical Issues Conference - 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at Carson Valley Inn.

This year, speakers include keynote presenter Jim Rounds, senior vice president and senior economist with Elliott D. Pollack and Company, Howard Charney, senior vice president of Cisco Systems, Nevada Assemblyman James Settelmeyer, R-Gardnerville, Lynn Hettrick, assistant chief of staff to the governor, Nevada Sen. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, and Karen Craig, Douglas County's economic development consultant.

A panel of local business owners, including Carson Valley Inn and Patmont GoPed, will share how they've adapted to the recession and their game plan for 2011.

Cost of the event is $45 per person and includes sessions, materials and meals.

To celebrate its third year of business, Battle Born Wine in Gardnerville is hosting an anniversary bash 4:30-7 p.m. Saturday.

"We have learned that running a small business is like raising a child," said owners Troy and Megan Phillips. "You must give it constant love and attention to keep up with the changes that take place around us. It takes the work and effort you put in to pay off over time."

The celebration will include music by local favorite All Hat No Cattle, 10 different wines and beers, $500 in wine and prize giveaways, and food by The Best Co.
