Sept. 17, 1915

According to a statement showing the gold and silver production of the United States for 1914 just issued by Director of the Mint Wooley, Nevada ranks fourth in production of gold, California, Colorado and Alaska leading in that order. This state was first as a producer of silver, $8,780,000 being the amount of white metal taken from Nevada. The total silver production in the United States in 1914 was $40,067,700.

Sept. 19, 1930

Glenbrook and Emerald Bay resorts at Lake Tahoe closed for the season, while Al Tahoe and Pomins on the west side of the lake close Monday. Meek's Bay resorts will remain open until Oct. 1, while Young Brothers Bijou Lodge will not close until the first of November. Meyers Station and Camp Richardson expect to remain open until Nov. 15, or until the travel over the Placerville route ceases for the season. All of the resorts report a prosperous season, and have been crowded to capacity since the middle of June.

Sept. 15, 1960

Miss Lake Tahoe crowned Sunday. Carolyn Peterson (37-25-37) of Camino in El Dorado County was crowned as the new Miss Lake Tahoe at ceremonies celebrating the first anniversary of Lake Tahoe Airport. Princesses named were Sharin Winter, 20, of Sparks, and Ida Mae Cabral, 18, of Tahoe Valley. Retiring queen Beverly Gungle of King's Beach presented the crown to Miss Peterson.

Sept. 12, 1985

Photo caption. Believe it or not, inside these huge white plastic bags is high quality feed for the much coddled (and for very good reason) cows at the Milky Way Dairy in Carson Valley. Herb and Craig Witt, owners of the farm, have modernized their plant in order to obtain the greatest yields.

Sept. 16, 2000

A favorite store in Wellington burned to the ground as the result of debris around a gas water heater. The Wellington mercantile, owned by David Chilcott and Theresa Gutierrez, was located on Highway 208 in downtown Wellington. No one was injured in the fire, which was reported around 9 a.m., and losses were estimated at more than $300,000, according to East Fork Fire and Paramedic District Investigator Terry Taylor.
