Girls' Soccer: Douglas posts solid rebound win

The Douglas girls' soccer team rebounded from a close loss to Carson earlier in the week with a 6-1 win over McQueen Saturday afternoon in Minden.

Tia Lyons scored a pair of goals, Katie Dry had a goal and three assists and Holly Downer had a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Tigers.

"I just have to credit the team for a fast start and a chin-up recovery from the Carson game," Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. "We're continuing to form niches and determine the starting lineup amongst a large squad.

"We made good progress on our goals for offensive movement."

Sierra Bertelone-Smith added a goal for the Tigers and Shannon Prinz and Jessica Vega each had an assists.

Courtney McKimmey and Brianna Randall combined for a solid game in net.

"Tia Lyons has played every minute the last two games with determination and savvy," Fitzhugh said. "Holly Downer has been asked to take on a dual role, playing both central defender and forward and she's met it in spades.

"Brianna Randall has proven to be an offensive threat while Courtney is handling the keeper position with confident competence.

"Defensively, Lacey Marsh has done excellent work on the backline as she's adjusted to the faster pace of the game.

"Shannon Hubbard handled McQueen's top threat very well."

Douglas also got to full strength for the first time this year as Natalie Freitas (wrist) and Erica Macias (ankle) saw their first playing time of the season after starting the majority of last season.

"They both had a positive effect on the team's chemisitry," Fitzhugh said.
