130 YEARS AGO

Memories of Abraham Lincoln: Lincoln was a thorough and consistent temperance man throughout. After his nomination for Presidency, he was informed that the National Convention was coming to Springfield to notify him of the nomination and request that he would waive his temperance views and furnish liquor. His answer was: "Gentlemen, you are valued friends. I would do anything that was right to serve you, but I cannot furnish liquor to anybody in my house."

120 YEARS AGO

Genuine Meteorite: George R. Dobbs presented an Appeal reporter a piece of a meteorite stone ... the original was eighteen inches in diameter and weighed about 300 pounds. It fell 14 years ago in Diamond Valley, Eureka county. George Sheppard saw it fall and found it imbedded in the earth over two feet and too hot to handle. A small piece, weighing six ounces can be seen at the Arlington House.

70 YEARS AGO

Leader August Berning announced the following program to be presented at the Civic Auditorium for the benefit of the emergency medical service of Ormsby county council of defense - Songs are "Anchors Aweigh," "Over There," Under the Double Eagles."

50 YEARS AGO

Advertisement: "Hunter's Lodge - 'Go into Orbit with our Prime Rib Night' - $1.65 each Wednesday. Billie Buchanan at our piano bar" - (downtown-Carson Street).

30 YEARS AGO

Denise Amodei has been named Girl of the Month for January by Soroptimist International of Carson City. Miss Amodei is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Amodei of Carson City and is active in 4-H and Keywanettes, is on the drill team and a spirit leader at CCHS.

10 YEARS AGO

Since 1946, Eagle Valley Children's Home has offered a family-like atmosphere and quality care for profoundly retarded and developmentally disabled children. They hope to break ground on a 17,000 square foot residential, office, activity and storage space facility.

• Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
