Dignitaries cut the Nevada shaped cake at the centennial cake event held in 1964. The Battle Born Birthday Cake committee will debut their cake on March 21.
The Battle Born Birthday Cake Celebration is set for 1-6 p.m. March 21 at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. It will commemorate the 150th anniversary of when President Lincoln signed into law the legislation enabling Nevada’s statehood in 1864.
The event will feature entertainment and a birthday cake, similar to the historic centennial cake event held in 1964. The Battle Born Birthday Cake committee is creating the cake, which weighs in at 1,300 pounds with frosting. It’s being constructed in the shape of the state, with 9,000 slices and spanning 13 feet by 21 feet. Earlier in the day, first lady Kathleen Sandoval will cut the cake using the sword of Nevada’s fifth governor, Charles Stevenson.
Festivities will consist of a performance by the state’s “honorary sesquicentennial poet,” Waddie Mitchell, an appearance by Mark Twain portrayed by McAvoy Layne, a performance of Sarah Winnemucca portrayed by Dianna Borges, the University of Nevada, Reno, Cadet Marching Band, and James Lee Reeves, who will be debuting his Nevada 150 anthem, “Battle Born, Nevada Proud”.
The event will be in the Sage Café at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, 1600 Medical Parkway. Guests are advised to park in lot 3.
