UNR graduation includes 20 Douglas residents

Five Gardnerville residents received their master’s degrees Saturday at virtual graduation for the University of Nevada, Reno.

They make up a quarter of the Douglas County residents who are graduating.

Graduating with a masters of public health is Mackenzie Abramson. Rhiannon Broersma and Brianne Madsen are graduating from the UNR School of Medicine with masters in physician assistant studies.

Broersma is a Douglas native and 2005 Douglas High School graduate. She received a full-ride Berner Memorial Scholarship to attend the university. She also worked as a seasonal firefighter in Carson Valley.

Erin Allison is receiving her masters degree in social work. A 2010 Douglas High graduate, who played volleyball for Marymount University, Allison is the daughter of photographer Cathleen Allison. Parker Cole is receiving a masters of arts.

The university held two virtual commencement ceremonies on Saturday to confer 5,092 degrees.

Graduation exercises included Spring 2020 graduates in a morning ceremony and Summer and Winter graduates in the afternoon. This past spring, the University conferred 3,143 degrees and certificates. With the combination of 550 summer and 1,399 fall degrees, the university will confer 1,949 degrees and certificates.

“We are very proud of our graduates and wish each and every one a future filled with success,” Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services Melisa Choroszy said. “The Class of 2020, in particular, has shown that they can overcome obstacles at every turn. A big thank you to all the faculty and staff who supported these students throughout their journey.”

The University only includes those Douglas residents who are currently living here.
