The American Basketball Association has announced the Reno Rogues have been added to its record-setting expansion for the upcoming season that will begin in November, according to a news release. "Reno is a great sports and entertainment city," ABA CEO Joe Newman said in the release, "and we were very surprised when the G-League abandoned Reno and headed to California. It left a great opening and two excellent owners have jumped in to fill the void."

Live racing has finally started in Northern Nevada. Fernley 95A Motorsports Complex will hold its first race of the 2020 season on Friday, May 29. IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks, and Diamond Mountain Hobby Stocks are on the card. Masks will be required, and social distancing will be enforced. Spectator admission is $10, with $25 for a pit pass. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Today the action moves to Winnemucca Regional Speedway for the two-day Higher Desert Classic, and next weekend will see another two-day show at Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon in conjunction with Octane Fest.

Jazz Johnson, one of the most accurate 3-point shooters in Nevada Wolf Pack history, was a worthy choice for this year’s Doc Martie award, honoring the school’s top senior male athlete. But he wasn’t the best choice. The award this year should have gone to Lindsey Drew.

Fernley 95A Motorsports Complex is hosting its second test and tune session Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drivers can take hot laps on the 3/8-mile clay oval for $45 and spectators can come and watch for $5 apiece. Two weeks ago, about 50 cars showed up, and I expect there will be a similar turnout Saturday. I plan to be there and hope to get some news about when the racing season will start.

One of Carson City’s biggest events is canceled rather than postponed this year. “To continue to assist in keeping our community healthy and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, Epic Rides, the consolidated municipality of Carson City and Visit Carson City have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Carson City Off-Road, originally scheduled for June 26-28,” a release from Carson City tourism bureau said.
The Nevada Wolf Pack football team was so close to a national championship it could taste it with their grits, fried catfish and black-eyed peas.
Last Saturday I took the drive from Carson to the Fernley 95A Motorsports Complex to observe the test and tune session on the 3/8-mile clay oval. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of race cars on hand in the pits. Although I didn’t get an exact count, I estimated about 50 cars on hand, about half of them Modifieds. Observing social distancing, I parked above turns three and four and watched hot laps for several groups. In addition to the Modifieds, there were Hobby Stocks, Dwarfs, Pro Stocks, Pro Fours, Mini Stocks (Gen-X), winged and non-winged Sprint Cars, and one 1940s-style Jalopy racer.
Don Shula loved his family. He loved his faith. And he loved football. The Hall of Fame NFL coach, who passed away this week at the age of 90, went to church each day, was a devoted and loyal father, husband and friend and, maybe above all else, a football coach. His amazing life had no room for anything else. Of all the people I’ve met and worked with as a sports reporter over the past 40 years, there is nobody I admire and respect more than Don Shula. Shula was the father figure in my professional life.

Carson High School girls basketball coach Doug Whisler resigned from his position Wednesday, according to a release from Carson athletic director Blair Roman.
After weeks of no racing except for the simulated type, there’s good news on the horizon. Locally, Fernley 95A Motorsports complex has rescheduled its postponed preseason test and tune for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drivers wanting to take their cars on track will pay $45 for the privilege, and spectators will be admitted for a mere $5 fee. Social distancing rules will apply, and the track will be enforcing those. I plan to be on hand to check out new and returning competitors.
Try to imagine a fall season without Nevada Wolf Pack football.
