Just as the Douglas County Public Library is in the search for a new director, the current interim director is resigning effective April 15.

Julia Brown has been in charge at the library since she was appointed on July 27, 2021.

She’s been clear since the beginning that she’s not interested in the permanent position. Brown officially resigned on St. Patrick’s Day.

“Julia has been a highly valued staff member during her years as library supervisor and, more recently, in the dual role of Supervisor and Interim Library Director,” said Douglas County Library Board Chairwoman Heather Martin Maier. “She will be sorely missed; however, we wish her well in her future endeavors. We are very grateful for the generous notice she provided which will allow us to make a smooth transition as we reach the final stages of our current Library Director search.”

On Tuesday, library trustees learned that a recruitment firm has five qualified applicants for the permanent job.

They approved up to $1,500 for travel expenses for each candidate and $5,000 in moving expenses, according to Douglas County Human Resources Director Wendy Lang.

In the interim between Brown’s departure and the arrival of a new director, the board will be working with staff to provide support. Services at the library will not be affected and will continue to be provided to the public at the valley and Lake Tahoe branches.

“Our recruitment effort is focused on finding an experienced candidate with strong leadership skills who is a unifier, data-driven, and enjoys reaching out to the community,” said Maier. “We are confident that our current search will result in success in this regard.”
