Work continues on Bridgeport Post Office

Work on the Bridgeport Post Office is continuing even as the Christmas mailing season arrives.

With the arrival of hands down the busiest mailing week of the year, Mono County supervisors expressed concern that the Bridgeport Post Office repairs have yet to be completed.

Housed in a leased building in the Mono County seat, the post office received severe structural damage and broken pipes during last winter’s record storms.

“The Bridgeport Post Office was shut down due to structural damage and broken pipes,” supervisors said. “During this period, the two Bridgeport Post Office employees were forced to work outside of the building in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees.”

On Dec. 11, supervisors expressed concern that the post office was closed.

A spokesman for the office said that while the window was inaccessible for a few hours due to construction the office continues to function.

“We are open for business in our temporary quarters while waiting for the building owner to finish repairs,” Spokesman David Rupert said on Thursday.

“We are just as eager as the community to return to our facility,” the postal service said in an official statement. “We hope the owner will complete maintenance work as soon as possible.”

It has been a long year for Mono County residents that started with Highway 395 being closed for long stretches for avalanches and other issues.

Work has been completed on fixing the highway which suffered structural damage at High Point Curve above Topaz Lake.
