Trees piling up along Waterloo Lane the week between Christmas and New Year's.

There’s already a pile of former Christmas trees growing at the drop-off across from Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

In Carson Valley, Douglas Disposal customers may leave their tree along with their garbage Jan. 2-6 and it will be picked up on regular trash days. Trees taller than 6 feet should be cut in half.

The drop-off along Waterloo Lane is sponsored by the Douglas County Parks Department.

Because the trees are mulched, the rules for both pick-up and drop-off are the same.

All decoration and nails must be removed, and no flocked trees are allowed.

Trees will be processed into mulch and used for a variety of park weed abatement programs across the county.

Fire danger is another good reason to get the Christmas tree out of the house.

Needles falling off when you grab them or branches snapping in your hands are good signs that the tree is ready to go.
