The Nevada Comets 14 and under all-stars rebounded from a heartbreaking loss in its opener to win two games on Wednesday at the ASA National Championships in Broken Arrow, Okla.
After losing their opener 2-1 in nine innings to the Orland Park Sparks of Illinois, the Comets finished pool play with a 6-2 win over the Oklahoma City Jitterbugs. The Comets then began double elimination tournament play with a 9-3 win over the East Texas Sluggers. The Comets were scheduled to play the Kansas City Classics today.
Kayla Dunn was the winning pitcher against Oklahoma City, allowing two hits over 4 1/3 innings while striking out four. Calli Fisher allowed one hit over one inning and Shawna Vandeburgt got the final two outs, striking out one.
Katie Stevens and Vandeburgt were each 2-for-3, Brittany Puzey was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, Andrea Lazzari doubled with two RBIs, Jackie Trombley had a hit and an RBI and Fisher and Stevie Smith.
Against East Texas, Puzey struck out six while allowing three hits for the win. Vandeburgt and Smith each struck out one in one inning of work.
Dunn doubled twice and had two RBIs, Puzey had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, Lazzari had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, Stevens had two hits and an RBI, Fisher had a double and two RBIs and Malary Engstrom and Vandeburgt each added a hit.
