City fixing two Lakeview wells

Carson City resident Jim Stemler said many Lakeview residents have been curious about water trucks ferrying water for several days out of the northwest Carson neighborhood.

The city's utility department is flushing two wells in the area and rather than letting the water run through the streets, is trucking the water to the Quill Treatment Plant two canyons south for treatment, said Tom Hoffert, utility operations manager.

Hoffert said the two wells, which serve the Lakeview area, both received new pumps. Particles must be flushed from the water before it is potable, he said. One well is ready.

The city's water system is running about half a million gallons short with the loss of the pump bringing water from Marlett Lake. Hoffert said Friday that Carson residents used more than 21 million gallons of water, pushing the system limits almost to a stage one emergency, which asks for voluntary cutbacks from water users.

Hoffert said water use has hovered around 20 million gallons a day. About 4,000 area residents have received citations for watering on the wrong days or wasting water, he said.

Hoffert asked that people not use water to clean their driveways and sidewalks, which wastes excessive amounts of water, he said.

Watering restrictions are in effect until Sept. 30.

Odd-numbered addresses are allowed to water lawns on odd days of a month. Even-numbered addresses water on even days. Watering is prohibited on the 31st of any month and daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
