Dayton boys remain unbeaten

The Dayton boys basketball team stayed unbeaten for the season with a 65-50 win over Yerington in its Northern 3A opener.

Dayton was able to build a 52-29 lead after three quarters. Yerington coach Daron Wildermuth said the Dust Devils have a strong inside-outside game and should contend to be one of the top teams in the Northern 3A division.

Wes Thomas scored 18 of his 26 points in the second half for Yerington. For Dayton, Nick McQueen scored 20 points, Joel Kiraly had 12 points and Brian Lahmann added 10 points

The Fernley boys basketball team fought back, but couldn't overcome Lowry in its Northern 3A opener, losing 58-54.

Fernley trailed 47-39 going into the fourth quarter, but was able to cut the deficit to two with one minute left. After Lowry went back up by four, the Vaqueros had two chances to cut the deficit down to two again, but couldn't convert.

"It was right down to the wire," Fernley coach Dave Burns said. "It was a hard fought game by both teams. I just thought both teams deserved to win.

"Both teams worked extremely hard. I was really happy with our effort."

The Vaqueros led 14-11 after one quarter, but Lowry went on to take a 31-26 halftime lead.

Bryson Frazier scored 14 points, Adam Schwab had 12 points, Tim Hines had 11 points and Brian O'Dell added eight points for Fernley.

Burns said Frazier, at point guard, had his best game controlling the tempo and also praised Schwab.

"I thought Adam Schwab played with an enormous amount of energy," Burns said.

GIRLS

LOWRY 51, FERNLEY 44

Fernley couldn't quite overcome a 21-point halftime deficit in its Northern 3A opener.

"I predict them to win the division," said Fernley coach Ralph Dunn about Lowry. "We're right there. We've got to believe in what we can do."

Lowry led 33-12 at halftime before the Vaqueros came all the way back to cut the deficit to three points with one minute left before falling.

"I pulled my hair out, what was left after the first half," Dunn said. "Overall we played a real good two quarters."

Rachel Henderson scored 12 points and Kaylea Dunn added 11 points for Fernley.
