About 125 music lovers took advantage of a free concert Sunday by the Capital City Community Band.
Founded in 1978 by director Richard Doede, the band is comprised of 50 musicians who volunteer their time for rehearsals and performances.
The orchestra, along with the Carson City Parks Department, hosts at least five free concerts each year and perform at various functions assisting local churches and organizations with fund raising.
Sunday's concert at the Community Center featured 10 works -- from the patriotic to Christmas.
Before conducting the group in a march, Doede addressed the crowd.
"I was criticized for not playing a Sousa March once and I'll never make that mistake again," he said. "So if that woman is in the audience ..."
A voice from the center fourth row shouted out, "I'm here!" The crowd chuckled.
During their rendition of "Swingin' Jolly Old St. Nick" Doede made the audience participants in the music.
"You're all in the band now," he showed them when to clap to the beat. "But don't use it all up, you'll have to clap in the end, too."
Instead of the National Anthem, Doede led the orchestra in a rousing rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
If anyone is interested in joining the group call Doede at 883-2219 or E-mail ehbugli@aol.com.
The next concert is on Sunday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m.
