Creek cleanups, recycling projects and marker buoys to keep boats from anchoring near historic shipwrecks were among 11 different environmental projects across the nation that received funding this year from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BOAT/US).
This year, BOAT/US awarded a total of $11,163 to those 11 winners.
The winning groups were selected from among 54 applicants, which is up from the 18 who solicited grants last year.
Among the projects selected for the 2000 grants were;
- Lake Powell Yacht Club, Lake Powell, Ariz., to produce full-color posters for installation on trash cans at launch ramps, docks and marinas on Lake Powell, emphasizing the importance of keeping beaches and the lake, itself, pollution-free.
- Great Lakes Historical Society, Vermilion, Ohio, to develop a marker buoy system near shipwrecks in Lake Erie to help boaters avoid anchoring on historically significant sites.
- Reedville Fishermen's Museum, Reedville, Vir., to conduct a workshop on helping to restore oysters to Lower Chesapeake Bay.
Applications for the 2001 grants will be available in November and the application deadline is Feb. 1, 2001.
