RENO, Nev. (AP) - A man accused of kidnapping and raping the daughter of a retired Illinois police chief has been sentenced to up to 14 years in prison on charges stemming from a stand-off with police that led to his arrest.
Michael Ray Reeves, 46, was sentenced Wednesday by Washoe District Judge Brent Adams.
Reeves was the target of a nationwide manhunt until his Sept. 27 arrest that came after a shoot-out with police at the Western Village Inn and Casino in Sparks.
The shoot-out unfolded after a Sparks police officer spotted a car in the parking lot with Tennessee license plates that Reeves was suspected of stealing. The officer noticed ammunition in the car and learned of the warrants against Reeves after running a check on the vehicle.
Police fired tear gas into his motel room after Reeves refused to come out. He was shot twice in the chest when he burst from the room firing at officers with a semiautomatic handgun.
Reeves recovered from his wounds. No one else was hurt.
In Illinois, Reeves allegedly abducted a woman at the Ramada Inn Limited in Vienna early Sept. 9, tied her up and confined her inside a stolen truck, where he raped her before she managed to escape.
The victim's father is a retired Carrier Mills police chief. His family distributed 1,000 fliers from Mount Vernon in south-central Illinois to Paducah, Ky., to try to help police locate Reeves.
Prosecutors here expect Reeves will be returned to Illinois to face charges in that state.
