The prestigious Wine Spectator Awards for 2001 lists Adele's in Carson City as one of the world's best restaurants for wine. Restaurants are selected on the basis of the depth of the wine selections and the harmony between wine and menu. Only 40 Nevada restaurants are in the listing of 2,300 worldwide. Most are located in casino-resort hotels.
Adele's is the only award-winner for Carson City. Owner-chef Charlie Abowd has been building his wine collection for more than a decade. His 2,500-bottle international wine collection has won numerous awards. Adele's is also the venue for winemaker's dinners in which wines are showcased with menus that Charlie selects and prepares.
What does its take to win the Wine Spectator Award? "You need to have a large selection with depth and variety," Charlie says. "For the last two years, I've devoted a lot of time and resources to collecting wine from very small vineyards - those that produce 5,000 or fewer cases."
At Adele's, a changing list of featured wines and by-the-glass options allow patrons to sample a wide variety of wines. Wine picks are also popular in Adele's bar.
Adele's is open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturday, 1112 N. Carson St. Call 882-3353.
