The site of an African American saloon is the subject of an archaeological excavation in Virginia City this summer. Known as the Boston Saloon, it is the first African American site to be investigated by archaeologists in the state of Nevada.
The public is welcome to visit the dig this summer on weekdays, and the public can volunteer to work on the excavation in cooperation with UNR archaeological field school students. For details about the project schedule and volunteer information, contact Kelly Dixon at the UNR Department of Anthropology, 784-1029. Space is limited in the excavation area and the volunteer schedule is quickly being filled.
