HESPERIA, Calif. (AP) - About 16,000 pacifiers are being recalled because they are a choking hazard to infants, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The Pacee pacifiers were produced by Hesperia-based Small Beginnings Inc., which is cooperating in the recall.
''Those pacifiers were intended for premature babies. That means that they were smaller,'' Kim Dulic, a spokeswoman for the safety commission, said Wednesday. ''That would pose a choking hazard for normal-sized babies. And the packaging wasn't labeled to say the pacifiers were for premies.''
No injuries have been reported.
The pacifiers are blue with a butterfly-shaped shield. They are packaged in a plastic bag that has a picture of a baby sleeping with a teddy bear.
They were sold for about $1 each at hospitals and medical supply distributors nationwide in 1999 and 2000.
Consumers can turn in the pacifiers to the company for a refund.
