WASHINGTON - Two companies based in Washington state are recalling about 5,000 bicycles because of faulty disc brakes that can stick and cause crashes.

DiaTech USA of Kenmore, Wash., manufacturer of the brakes, and Derby USA of Kent, Wash., the importer and distributor, have received one report of a man who suffered broken ribs after losing control of his bicycle when the brake stuck, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

The brands and models of the recalled bicycles are Raleigh's M600, M800 and M8000; Diamondback's Zetec Comp and X-2; and Univega's DS950 and Alpina 700.

All the recalled bicycles are 2000 models, with ballistic spiral stop disc brakes labeled ''DIATECH.''

Raleigh, Diamondback and Univega bicycle dealers nationwide sold these bicycles from November 1999 through June 2000 for between $800 and $1,200.

The safety commission advises consumers to stop riding the bicycles immediately and return them to their dealers for free replacement of the front and rear brake calipers. For more information, consumers can call the safety commission at (800) 638-2772 between11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
